There’s something rather special about northern Cumbria, it’s wild, wonderous and so welcoming. Being remote it can feel rather isolated, yet that’s also its charm. This is North West England at its most enchanting, its lakes and hills
holding stories of mystery and magic, its people more relaxed, more warm –
here, life just seems a little less complicated.

Cumbria is a land of Vikings and Romans, UNESCO Heritage lakes and ancient walls; where age-old languages mix with modern slang – be addressed as a marra, and you’ve made a friend. The natural warmth of this region comes in its most effortless form at Farlam Hall, a traditional country house and recently renovated, luxury hotel. Dating back to the 15th century, Farlam Hall has been a family home for centuries, its walls privy to jovial gatherings and celebratory feasts over the years.

Today, feasting here comes with a star, both in the kitchen and Michelin. Having gained a Michelin Star in less than one year, chef Hrishikesh Desai’s Cedar Tree restaurant is where local, seasonal produce takes centre stage across his Anglo-Indian menu.

Just 20 minutes’ drive from Carlisle, Farlam Hall was recently updated into a modern country house hotel that is elegant yet comfortable, a home away from home with sophisticated touches in its modern art and delicate wallpapers. Guests can stay in one of the 14 guestrooms in the hotel or in the beautifully transformed coach house and stables, there are gardens to roam in, a walled kitchen garden to tempt your taste buds, two restaurants, (the second a more informal affair at Bistro Enkel), and a cocktail bar to while away the evening in.

Edging the Pennines on the very northern boundaries of the Lake District, the valleys and mountains here are wild and awe-striking, the hills a hiker’s paradise, the lakes a fishing haven and history buffs can walk Hadrian’s Wall just a few miles away.  Grab a bike or a golf buggy and explore the back roads or green fairways nearby, or head west for the windswept, wilderness-loving beach of Bowness-on-Solway.

What do you enjoy the most about running Farlam Hall?

“We all enjoy creating new ideas and looking at all the ways we can do things differently to enhance our guest experience and make Farlam Hall the go-to destination of the North West, whether that’s through the food offering, the luxurious touches in our bedrooms or promoting some of the many lesser known local attractions. Engaging with our guests and getting their feedback is always rewarding, as is welcoming back more and more regular guests”.

How do you approach sustainability?

“In 2024 we added sustainability as one of our main pillars and that also includes economic sustainability, so we always strive to work with local businesses and producers, not just for our food suppliers but also with every aspect of our business, from companies that support us with our marketing to guest services like mobile valet and transport recommendations.

We are also very much committed to our staff sustainability and always have the team’s work/life balance at the forefront of our business decisions. Our on-site kitchen garden plays a big part too by providing ingredients for our dishes and flowers for the hotel’s public areas and reducing plastic waste is also high on our agenda across the hotel”.

What’s next?

“We will soon be launching a unique and highly interactive dining experience for our guests which will be a very intimate and exclusive package, more details to be released soon! We also recently launched Bistro Enkel, available Sunday to Tuesday evenings, offering both residents and non-residents more casual dining, where classic, uncomplicated yet flavourful dishes are made using the freshest local and regional ingredients.

Our monthly Special Events have been very well received by guests so far – they are informative, interactive events hosted by Hrishikesh as well as a guest speaker and, with a different theme each time, they are starting to build up a following! Our next event is A Celebration of English Wines with Gusbourne on the 22nd June, followed by Champagne Drapier – L’histoire de Pere Pinot on the 10th July”.
