Fascinated by coloured gemstones from a young age, Katie’s passion for exuberant designs
grew further after witnessing the intricate craft and workmanship
required for traditional Indian jewellery.
With an ethical supply chain and trusted sources of gemstones, Katie’s designs at Pomegranate London fuses her experience of working in the jewellery industry for over 20 years and her desire to create truly inspirational, sustainable pieces of beauty.
Having studied fashion. and after working in the buying department of Harvey Nichols and selling her jewellery at markets and fairs across the country, Katie launched Pomegranate in 2009 on Kensington Square. 14 years later she has established a loyal following of bejewelled fans nationally and internationally.
Much of Katie’s handmade designs are limited editions, one-of-a-kind pieces, rings, necklaces and bracelets, using unique, free-size gemstones. Her jewellery is made from her designs in India, at a handful of workshops in Jaipur, each piece carefully hand crafted and set with colourful gemstones. Visiting the workshops on a regular basis, Katie has developed a close relationship with the families who run them, ensuring her pieces are created ethically and sustainably.
As a trained gemmologist at the GIA, Katie’s designs can be found at her shop as well as independent jewellers across the UK and abroad.
Running a small business has its challenges, what do you enjoy the most about running your business?
“Running your own business means you have to be the accountant, cleaner, HR manager, customer service rep, creative force, and so on, and it is demanding in that respect – it is actually this jack of all trade aspect that I love the most,” explains Katie, “there is never a dull moment and always lots to learn. We have been based on Kensington Square for 14 years and have accrued so many lovely long term, loyal customers – our sense of community is very important to us.”
How do you approach sustainability?
“Nothing is ever wasted – we break up designs that haven’t worked, melt gold pieces and recreate – repair, restring and replate as is needed for our customers to ensure all the longevity of our designs,” continues Katie.
What’s next for Pomegranate?
“We are completely re-fitting the shop and can’t wait for our new look – watch this space!”
